Some materials carry more than texture alone. Rapolano travertine is one of them. Quarried in Tuscany since the days of the Roman Empire, this stone became the building block of the Colosseum, the Baths of Caracalla, and dozens of temples that have endured for millennia. Its warm hue, distinctive veining, and porous structure remain synonymous with monumental beauty to this day. In Spring 2025, Coliseum introduced the Aurelia collection—porcelain stoneware whose graphics faithfully reproduce the aesthetic of this legendary stone.
The texture was developed not from some abstract notion of travertine, but through the close study of actual material from the Rapolano quarries. Soft colour transitions, fine veining, gentle tonal irregularity—all have been transferred to the tile surface with meticulous attention to detail. A matte finish heightens the resemblance to natural stone: the surface does not glare and feels tactile, substantial.
The collection is offered in two colourways, each interpreting the character of travertine in its own way. Aurelia White is a light, almost creamy shade with delicate undertones. It fills a room with air and light, visually expands the space, and yet retains the stony depth that distinguishes genuine materials from simple imitations. This tone works equally well in contemporary minimalist interiors and in spaces with classical elements. Aurelia Beige is richer—the instantly recognisable colour of travertine. Here the veining reads more prominently, the interplay of warm and cool tones within a single tile is more pronounced. Porcelain stoneware in this shade lends an interior a sense of heritage, of lived-in warmth, of noble patina.
The 60×120 cm format makes the collection versatile in application. Large-format tiles perform well on both floors and walls; they suit bathrooms and kitchens in private homes, the entrance halls of restaurants and boutiques, and office environments where a distinguished finish matters. Fewer grout lines, the stone pattern revealed in unbroken sections, and the room acquires that calm, assured character typical of interiors finished with quality materials.
